Yom Hashoah Commemoration

April 26, 2003

The United Jewish Council of Anne Arundel County sponsored a Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Day of Remembrance) commemoration on April 28, 2003 featuring Martin Goldsmith, author of "The Inextinguishable Symphony: a True Story of Music and Love in Nazi Germany." The special presentation, held at Congregation Kneseth Israel, was chaired by Rabbi Joseph M. Forman of Temple Beth Shalom. He participated together with Rabbi Liebe Hoffman of Congregation Kol Ami, Rabbi Moshe Weisblum of Congregation Kneseth Israel, and Rabbi Stephen Weisman of Temple Solel. Rabbi Weisblum sang numerous cantorial selections and Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Taler, concentration camp survivors, also participated.

Mr. Goldsmith is a National Public Radio senior commentator and has worked at numerous radio stations to include WETA-FM in Washington. His book discusses the history of the Kulterband orchestras in Nazi Germany, the all-Jewish performing arts ensembles. These orchestras were a propaganda tool of Joseph Goebbels, maintaining the Jews separate from the other Germans while using these ensembles to demonstrate to outside governments how decently the Jews were treated. Mr. Goldsmith’s parents, professional musicians, met through their participation in one of these orchestras.
