UJC’s Children’s Israeli Independence Day Celebration is a
Blast
On Sunday, April 21st,
children of our community really had something to cheer about to honor Israel’s
54th anniversary – the magnificent entertainment brought to them
live from California of Len Levitt’s fabulous puppets. Mr. Levitt’s
award-winning puppets have appeared on numerous television programs and have now
graced Annapolis with the three-fold adventure in a kibbutz, then Jerusalem, and
finally Tel Aviv. Sponsored and underwritten by the United Jewish Council of
Anne Arundel County, the kids loved the adventures as did their parents as Mr.
Levitt succeeded in bringing the experience of Israel alive for all for a couple
of hours in Annapolis.
Adding further to the
fun and celebration were the clowns who made innumerable balloon shapes, while
other volunteers led the children in creating various crafts and some more did
face painting. Many people wrote postcards to place in Israel's banks, post
offices, and supermarkets to offer moral support in these challenging
times. There was no shortage of activities for the 130 who attended –
it is just unfortunate that more of our young families did not take advantage of
this world class activity (held indoors on a cool and rainy day) that was noted
to be desired most strongly (youth activities) in the recent county-wide Jewish
demographic survey.

This program was a resounding success largely to the unbelievable work of the
co-chairman, Ellery Wolf who also served as MC, and Jennifer Laszlo-Mizrahi.
Mike Snyder was another critical component who did an incredible share of the
work. Others who contributed to making this program a resounding success were:
Brian Brown, Daniella Brown, Glenn Carr, Judi Cohen, Adam Goldsmith, Eric
Handelsman, Pam Handelsman, Marcia Lewis, Libby Monias, Marianne Monias, Amy
Plavner, Nina Preuss, Howard Rosenbloom, Mickey Rubin, Aaron Schmerling, Sara Schmerling,
Gail Snyder, and David Wolf.
